I am looking to buy a nicer camera since the one I have is one of th first digital cameras to have been made and is certainly a POS by today's standards. Here is what I am looking for:

1)High quality pictures

2)good zoom lens or the option to interchange lenses

3)adjust the shutter speed, have a macro setting, and more but these are a must

4)large view finder

5)not too bulky but if it is a really good camera for a good price, i could deal with it

6) under $400.

Any input is welcome. Thanks in advance!

Canon G9 or the new canon G11 does all that your talking about and full manual. I'd say for what you want, going DSLR on that price won't hit what you want to do with it. E.g. the entry level DSLRs (D5000, D90) won't do macro without another lens etc. The G11 is a half way house infact alot of pros use it as their out and about camera. I still own a G11 for holiday snaps, it has a 5X optical zoom and good low ISO performance, it has a good viewfinder for an P and S camera and it can do full manual (control of shutter and ap etc) It will do macro also. (it's a bit builkier than the average P&shoot but wayyyy smaller than even the smallest DSLR. It also is very wide angled for a small camera meaning you can get nice landscape shots.

See here: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerSh...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1283966962&sr=8-1

Here are some shots of my holiday in Aruba last year using the G9 (old model which isn't as good as G11 but still awesome). These are just on manual as my other half is not a photographer but I always shot full manual or Ap priority mode. The Lizard was shot on full manual by myself (not a perfect shot by any means tho).

by the way, NIKON pwns Canon any day of the week

Whilst that's an opinion, I'd still say your way off, not in the P and shoot game the market share canon has of this region speaks volumes. The Nikon Coolpix range is naff IMO. Nikon I'd say better for DSLRs (I have a D700) canon better Point and Shoot and some advanced manual P&S that are almost DSLRs themselves (the G series).

Again though, I just don't like canons DSLRs as I have held them and they didn't feel right in my hands, which at the end of the day is most important. I am sure there is nothing in the image quality between them. Plenty of decent pros use canon. Find what works for you, try them in the shop. Fire off some shots.

just buy a used dslr. maybe a nikon d70s with an 18-135mm lens.
