What can a Walking catfish have as food??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Are you getting filleted tilapia or whole tilapia?
min my opinion:- If filleted then no, if whole then you will need to rinse and fillet in my opinion for a catfish of this style and size then cut the fillets into chunks or pieces that he can eat.
Others may differ.

I most usually only care that the fish our fish eat are safe and can be swallowed.

(To clevergorilla78): If you're getting whole tilapia, gutted or not, I would advise to cut the dorsal fin spines off. Perciform fish (including cichlids and consequently tilapia) have them to choke anything that's trying to eat them, which is the last thing you want.

For many larger catfish I would not bother deskinning, would just remove dorsal as noted above, but since Clarias have relatively small mouths and have a nature more vacuum cleaner style rag it around and pull bits off than gulp it down in one like say a redtail would, then yes I think I would also try to get the skin off personally.

So de skin, wash, and watch out for fins. The fish I bought is rather large so will have plenty of food for months with it. Cheers all!!! Will update more

So I recently got given some duckweed from my local pet shop and once returned home noticed there was a stow away neon tetra. Thought the lil guy was on his final few hours in the tank with him but so far lasted 2 days. I know it’s only a matter of time before the inevitable happens but it’s got me thinking.
What tank mates could I have with a Clarias??

Stowaway neon tetra? Time to set up another tank for it and at least 5 others and embrace the reality that is my username (if you haven't already) ?

As for walking catfish tank mates, you could try tinfoil barbs or large pimelodids (eg: sailfin pictus catfish, zebra shovelnose catfish). They can stand up for themselves without being eaten.

You've got an impressive-looking, active and voracious fish in that Clarias; I'd say just keep it alone and enjoy it. The Clarias I owned were relentless in their constant harassment of other fish and would eventually kill anything else kept with them. It was just a constant nibble-nibble-nibble that quickly resulted in missing scales, fins, etc. Death by a thousand cuts, not a nice way to go.

That being said, I don't think you have mentioned the size of tank this fish is occupying, or did I miss it? That would be a huge determining factor in possible tankmates.
