48 inches isn't much room for 2 aggressive territorial Cichlids. They don't understaand about bio-load. They just know there's another Cichlid a few feet away at all times. If it were me I'd go for some fast dither/target fish instead of another Cichlid tankmate.
It won't look understocked when they're full grown and furious at each other :-)
ya my bad. i didnt catch the 48 inches part. i thought it was a standard 120 at 5 ft and figured a jag but not a 48 inch tank.

Dithers, nothing else. Not enough tank length. Keep a fair amount of decoration in mind. The tex is going to grow a whole lot faster than the gt, so he will most likely be the bully. Just give some divisions to the tank so they can get out of each other's sight every once in a while.

Any suggestions on dithers besides SD's? I like them ok but it's wild doing water changes with them freaking out all the time.

i had a jack dempsey that lived fine with a Gt and a green texas. the texas was the mean one she was a large female bout 10" with teeth that would scape on the glass. mabe a large oscar but they are pussies all depends on your fish man try re arranging the tank they hate that ahha used to work for a couple days at least

I thought adding another medium sized cichlid might help out by spreading out the aggression. Probably a bad idea though. Still looking for some alternatives to SD's.
