Right now we're expanding a tank that just has 6 platys and a pleco in it (not sure what kind but they only grow to 2 inches long). We're getting a 50 gallon tank and are trying to decide what to put in it (besides the current fish). We are pretty much beginners..my husband has more experience than me but has always kept just one type of of fish to a tank..so mixing fish is new to us. I don't want a big tank full of tiny fish, I'd like some variety in size. We don't want to try growing live plants yet, so anything that requires that we wouldn't want. Here's a list of some fish I like, please tell me if some/any of them would work in a 50 gallon tank together.

Silver Dollars..on the internet I've read they require from a 40 gallon to a 100+ gallon aquarium as adults..I've also seen varying numbers that you can keep together. Could you keep just two (or 3 if that would fit) of these together in this size tank as adults?

Dwarf or regular gouramis..I know only one male..how many females would he need? I particularly like the pearl gouramis, but would they be suitable for this tank?

Some animals to help keep the tank clean..we already have the one pleco, I would also like an albino BN. Would snails work? And how many of these should I have?

Before finishing your post I was going to suggest pearl gouramis, I have 1m two female. Dwarf crimson gouramis, honey gouramis, and even paradise fish all work great. Nerite zebra snails are good algae eating snails that won't reproduce. Could get into dwarf cichlids if you wanted, rams and apistogramma are awesome. Cory cats are an awesome clean up crew, and most tetra would work as well.

I wouldn't add cichlids to your tank just because they get big and are fairly aggressive especially if you're going to have silver dollars.
I've had Gourami's, Silver dollars, Mollies, angels, and tetras in the same tank. They worked perfectly together. Also had a clown pleco and a bunch of snails.

Dwarf cichlids could be mixed in? I didn't know they were community fish. They are beautiful.

How large a tank do you have BBFishKeeper?

I have Bolivian rams, German blue rams, both in a community setting. Ordered some apistos also, so I'll have those too, but for my planted tank. A little chasing here and there but no damage or anything.

Depending on the dimensions of your tank you could try a Kissing Gourami. They can get over 10 inches but will cohabitate peacefully with smaller fish. They also will eat algae as part of their diet.

Here is a pic mine.
