What CANISTER filters should I get?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi there,
I have a nu clear filter from marine depot..
I love it on my custom 240 gallon. :-)

Well, I never used Eheim before. I'm assuming your going to put one on each side.. Looks like it has a carbon filter pad, instead of the actual carbon..

I don't know. I like mine because you can change the media to your specifications. I would assume the fluval fx series might be similar..

In my opinion it might be a close call with your 180. In the reviews I read most people have one on a 75 gallon..

True.. That is the maximum capacity of the filter. There is a formula I think, of the capacity of the filter vs. the gallons of the Aquarium..

But, looking earlier in the thread I am assuming you need the filters for a freshwater aquarium. So, you might be right. As long as you don't overfeed, you might be okay..

My only concern is the carbon pad. Have you looked into the pads, for replacement? I'm hoping they don't leach phosphates into your water.. I prefer the pelleted or granulated carbon, and maybe some phospure, or chemi-pure.

Then again I have a saltwater tank.. :)

Will two Eheim 2217s work, or are they not powerful enough?

They are enough to biologically filter a moderately stock 180g tank. With only one fish, the jardini, chances are high it will be enough. If you have ammonia or nitrite on any day, then you don't have enough biological filtration. I put eheim pre-filters on mine to prevent sand and waste from entering the canister. I just fill the canister with ceramic media and a blue coarse sponge on top to prevent any detritus from the ceramic media entering the main tank.

Water changes will be your best friend for removing the nitrates.
