What catfish can go in a 55

Get a pictus. i've had mine for a year now, and he's only grown from 4" to MAYBE 5". And I do weekly 75% water changes, so the water is super clean, and all of my cichlids are growing like mad. Most of them, I don't believe get as big as people think. That, or they are just SUPER slow growers.

And I've had 4 pictus cats now. I've had ones that just lay in a cave all day and are super lazy, and I've had a few that swim absolutely non stop, and are like the freaking energizer bunny. Check them out in the tank you're buying them from, and get the disposition you want.

Pictus are my favorite. They are just plain awesome. Get one.....You'll love it!

Oh.....And remember to NOT use a net. They'll get stuck in it for sure with their barbs. I learned the hard way. Had to cut them out of the net (cut the net not the fish.....obviously, but just for clarification since that reads weird). And don't pick them up with your hand. They'll cut you. I've found that tupperware works best.

I have two 4 line pictus in my 29 at my moms that I left for my brother their both like 8" I had them for like 5 years . Along with clyde my convict. I wanted to trade him my firemouth for them but he dont want to . I feel bad cause thier in a small tank and always banging the glass when spooked.

The 4 liners from my experience do tend to be a bit more sedentary. They seem to like to sit in a cave, and gobble up whatever food comes by them. In my experience, they seem to grow faster since they are less active. They also seem to get bigger.

I often wonder if there's a few different types based on location of origin. Some do seem to grow faster/larger, and some just don't seem to get very big at all. I wonder if anyone out there has any information regarding this.

i would like some thing a little bigger since its gunna be living with jd

My 8" JD never bothered any pictus cats I've had. I wouldn't worry about it. Seemed like my JD had no interest in catfish. Same thing with my GT.

My big old male Festae ate one once, though. But he was a big mean fish.....Definitely not the temper of a typical JD.

You may check your LFS. I've seen a few real big ones for sale at mine before (8+ inches). People seem like they bring them in after they've outgrown their 30 gallon tanks. I just can't get mine to grow that big for some reason. Seems like some just do, and some don't.

good to know. im definitly leaning toward a pictus but i want to if my big jd is a male if so i might try t o pair him with a smaller female i traded my neighbor for my bgk
