What causes Deformity in Stingray Pups?

Hey zoodiver

I recently had 3 pups w cleft lips and was wondering is there maybe a vitamin that they are missing from her diet? Ive been breeding rays for a while and this is the only female that this is happening with...

I've kinda figured it was lack of food during early stages of my castexi's pregnancy that caused the batman deformity or clefts as this was the only similarity I could find during the two times it happened with her. Both these pregnancy's produced pups from an unformed pup to a full batman to a normal pup with spacing everywhere inbetween. I've also wondered if rays were able to cut off food to thier unborn pups or some of thier pups during times of less food so some would survive and if things got better they began to recieve food again thus creating the batman effect on pups

this was this females second litter. first litter was 2 premature pups both w cleft lips, she was heavily harassed by the males and both the pups died. second litter i seperated her from the males for her whole pregnancy and 3 of the 5 pups had cleft lips. other then the cleft lips all 5 pups were big and healthy

Was the female impregnated by the same male both times. If so make sure a different male gets her this time and see if you have any clefts. If no clefts at that point maybe it is a trait passed by the male.

Not sure who got her this round. i will deff seperate the male from the first 2 litters after this next litter

Shadow,

Good observation on the male. I wouldnt seeing if thats the case due to genetics.
