Iv lost 3 female Gt's before to this, tried to treat em with Clout and other meds and no luck. Iv had a male Gt for the past 1.5 years, he was in the same tank as the other female gt"s that died to this. In the past month i bought a new, bigger tank and now hes in there. He seems to be losing his appetite, pays no attention to food at all and the other day looked like the white poo. I want to know what causes this?? I only feed my fish Hikari pellets, some frozen bloodworms, frozen krill, his favorite being Hikari Massivore Delite, never anything live like feeders. I figured if he got the parasite from the other Gt's that iv had, he would have goten sick and died a long time ago. Hes just not the same fish anymore, still swims around and stuff, just wana know what causes this.:help2:

It is totaly possable he got it from the others . It often takes a while for it to get the uper hand. The best way to treat it is by soaking the food in an anti parasite medacation while he's still eating. Read the stringy poop thred there is some good info in there.

I read somewhere that it can come from excess poo in the tank. Fish will "mouth it" thinking its food. Maybe others can chime in with a theory. If this is true, you can direct a powerhead or water flow to the intake filter.

Aquanero is right, you need to soak some pellets in some metro for 10-15 mins. If he's not eating, its going to be tough. GL

The HITH disease/syndrome is called Hexamitiasis. Hexamita intestinalis is a flagellated protozoan which is often associated with the disease. There are also other protozoan and bacterial organisms often associated with Hexamitiasis, but these are thought to be secondary.

There is no one answer to what the cause is - yet. It's usually said to be a combination of incorrect diet, lack of vitamins, and stress.

Metro/Clout/Octozin etc (all containing metronidazole) will kill flagellated protozoans (i.e. Hexamita) and then an internal parasite treatment, correct diet and clean water usually help.

agree. diet and dirty water are the biggest factors, but gt's seem to get it more than most. metro best cure. dose the water and mix some into frozen or geletin based food. 25% weekly wc and keep substrate clean

Thats funny cuz i always do my water changes every week! Whenever i see poo, it bugs me and i will get it out, i vac all the time, very well.

You are doing everything right. GT's are just a cursed lot. I've tried a few GT's and they always come with white poo and leave with white poo, regardless of any effort. I no longer purchase GT's, even though it was my dream fish.

I love GT's, they are my favorite fish. I also noticed he will open his mouth and shake his head like hes trying to cough somthing up, noticed it the past few weeks. No idea why hes doin that, like i said before, havent changed food or anything like that, plus my filtration is pretty good with a fx5 on a 130g tank. Its driving me crazy because i want to grow out my boy and keep him till hes old.

Try buying one from a very different source than where you got these sick ones. If you can afford the shipping, that is.
