What cichlid got you obsessed with cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Honestly, my first cichlid that got me hooked into cichlids and fish keeping was a blood parrot. I was a little kid, over stocked tank, and out of the chaos only a single blood parrot survived, and we kinda liked it, and as I grew older I started learning more about fish care and I started looking into other fish to keep with it, then upgrading my tank to something of an appropriate size, then just messing around and figuring out other aquarium aspects.

This is the first time as a fish keeper that I have not had a blood parrot of some sort. Not sure if I want to get another one quiet yet but they are, by far, my favorite fish and the reason I am an aquariaculturist.

Convicts for sure. Still one of my favorites. Great personality. Extremely easy to keep. Every one interested in cichlids should start off with a convict pair in a 29 gallon tank in my opinion. So cool.

Jack Dempseys, Jags, and Firemouths...i used to keep all of them as juvies in a 20 gallon tank...i ended up with just the Jag....over time...i learned how to properly house them...thats why i never have jags anymore.

For me it was a baby JD many moons ago. Even after being bit by the Cichla bug a few months ago, I found myself at the LFS last week purchasing a 2" JD. Hopefully this one will make it to adulthood while in my care.

started 20 years ago with a firemouth (just like the one I had scene on the bag of pellets ;-) ) Now my favorites are red islatus, festae, and my bifas

It all started with jack dempseys back when I was about 13 years old..but then it was the acaras and geos that got me seriously into cichlids. I don't really have a cichlid tank of my own per se, but my wife has some growouts of various geos, including some species i never kept before, so that keeps my interest in cichlids going
