i started off with an oscar in 5th grade but my friends jack dempsey had me drooling!

Other than Angels, which were my first cichlids, synspilum got me into the large species

it was the sym that opened me up to the viejas. i had a bifas and hartwegi in my college years that really kicked my passion up.

Tanganyikans for me, my dad kept them and After I was ready to move on from my first 10g (age 12) after reading up a lot in aquarium books I felt ready to go into african cichlids.
My first cichlids were Julies, lelupi, variabilichromis moorii. I also had a little tank with shellies.

after that tank my first new worlds were gold severums

Probably the Oscar for me saw them and had them then and still have a soft spot for them. It really kicked in with the first batch of fry we raised just loved how you could put your hand in with them and scoop them out. It was like they had no fear and just wanted attention but mostly food. They are just a big mellow fish unless you fit in their mouth.

Although I kept Oscars, JDs, and a few others (those few that were available) back in the late 1950s/early 60s, it was in the mid 80s when a pair of Parachromis managuense grew to adulthood and spawned in a 150 gal that put me over the edge.
Even when I took a bucket full of their 1" fry to a LFS where they offered to take 10 and give $0.25 credit for each, though there were 50 in the bucket, I was not deterred, and have been running at a self induced, self satisfying, loss ever since.
Funny how the same happened back in the 90s with Vieja fry, again in the early 2000s when I had a regularly spawning pair of Nandopsi haitiensus, and had a hard time giving fry away.

and not that many months back with nicaraguense

Frontosa....when I was a kid, I was given a 20 gallon tank to house my comet goldfish. So I went to a fish store and saw a tank full of adult Frontosas. I bought a 2" Frontosa not realizing that in a few months the 20 gallon tank was not big enough. Sadly, I had to bring my pet fish to the fish store to trade for a bunch of tetras.

Now that I am able to financially afford to acquire a tank suitable for Frontosas, my dream of owning Frontosas has become a reality.
