Goto a hobby shop or craft store and buy some different colored construction paper to put behind your tank. If you find a color that you like then you can paint that color on for a more professional looking background.

Thanks great idea, have you gotten any snow yet today in NE?

Nope it's heading south this time. Just freaking cold!!!

I'm ready for Summer!

Rocky backgrounds look sooooo gooood.

In the back at Home Depot I found 2’x4’ (1/16~1/8 thick) sheets with different rock pattern prints. They look like a sheer cut granite or sandstone or etc… This is what I use on most of my tanks…

I also have two different blue backgrounds as well as black on different tanks… which is “best” completely depends on fish, décor and ambiance of the room the tank is in…

PS - I like the idea of experimenting with construction paper...

I agree on both of these points.

You could go with white, or you could do blue, or green, whichever brings out the color of your centerpiece fish.

Yes, I'm refering to a fish tank like it's furniture. In all reality, it is. It's not like a dog or cat who can move from room to room (unless it's a betta in a small tank) And there is usually 1 fish in your tank that is your pride, and joy, and the "Centerpiece" of the whole tank. You want to decorate your tank around that particular fish, and you also want it to match the room it's in.

That's not saying "fish are moving furniture" no, they're pets, and family friends. But they look like a picture, or the tank is a piece of furniture, and should be treated as such.

in a magazine i once bought (one of the ones that have their own forums here), they did an expirament with some kind of catfish to see what backgrounds were the best for stress levels of fish. it turns out blue is best, then black. red is the worst, it just gets the fish all worked up.

hope this helps.
