What Color Is This?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If your cycling a new tank.. looks like your at the top-swing. nitrates are likely bottoming out.. Ammonia will likely spike again in 2-3 days. about the same time the nitrites drop down. silly.. but are you sure your using the nitrite drops w/ the nitrite list? I know i've accidentally grabbed the wrong card before to double check... man you know it's bad when you can look at those tests w/out the card and guess almost 100% accurate.. lol.

Nitrites are about 5.0 ppm +
Ammonia about 5.0 ppm +

Your nitrites between 2.0 and 5, nitrates ehhh very very little...more time man, could I as what you are feeding the tank? liquid ammonia/fish food?

Put the vial over the colors and whatever box you can't make out via looking through is how I read mine. I agree with five on the nitrites.
Brilliant idea Otolith!

Ive been very careful not to mix anything up.

I'm cycling with Africans in the tank feeding them pellets, probably too much at times.

Thanks again for all the help. Im getting ready to check it again since I have a small fish acting a little sick.

It says not to put the vial over the colors, put it next to the white part and compare. I'm just saying what the directions say, no flaming please.

Personally looks like 2.0 for the nitrites. If your cycling and you have nitrates and nitrites, that's a bit weird.

Nitrates are present, but nitrites are not at 0ppm.The cylcle has not finished. I'm not trying to be rude, but what difference does it make?Until ammmonia and nitrite are at 0ppm,it really doesn't matter.

I was thinking the exact same thing. If you have ammonia and nitrites then your not cycled. Simple as that.

Yes, pour some benificial bacteria in the tank...

The reason it matters is if the Nitrites get too high before the Nitrates start to remove them the fish will die! Thats what just happened yesterday I lost a Johanni  I mentioned he had been acting odd and that's why I was so concerned and asked for help from some people that might care here at MFK.

~ocean I have some beneficial bacteria that I used to get it started do you guys think it would help to add more near the end of this cycle? I will try anything!

RIP Little guy

The nitrAtes are the waste of the bacteria that consume the nitrItes. The only way to lower the nitrAtes is to do water changes. But you don't need to worry about that until the cycle completes.
You are cycling with African cichlids?
