So I'm looking at fish in the 6-7" range? Anyone got a more exotic species? Or one that's not your common convict or firemouth.

Ever think of something non-cichlid? A lurker type puffer like an arrowhead, Congo or hairy would be fine in that tank.

What about a Flier cichlid? Mine is very friendly. Or any acara, they have a lot of personality for a fish that size. IMO way more than firemouths. I also like Sajica, Spilurum and Convicts though. Or go unheated, save money, and do some kind of Australaheros - they also have a lot of personality, or even if you're not stuck on cichlids, do a sunfish. They have a lot of personality and a lone one should be fine in that size tank.

If not, then blue acara, or a blood parrot; they get solidly chunky.

Labridens are pretty exotic. Social interactions and breeding behavior is different, I think? I've never had em, but I'd be jealous if you started posting pics and videos of yours.
