What Dechlorinator Does Everyone Use?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You should fill up a big garbage can of water, add about 10 air bublers or a powerhead. Put the lid on so no light can get through and let it sit for a week also add some carbon to the water and change that every 2 days. i was gona do this but i do to many waterchanges a week.

or you can just go out and buy an aquarium water aquafier.

not much chlorine anyway, and just have a powerhead help to diffuse some away, even though i dont need too.

How come nobody uses Stress Coat? Is there something bad about it? I have been using it in my 55 gal. for over a year without any problems.

I used to religiously use de-chlorinator with all my water changes until a good friend of mine said that he never uses it. He's been keeping fish for ages and he hasn't used de-chlor in about 10 years. I'm not talking about someone who has one dirty tank of goldfish, he has many more tanks than me filled with exotic fish that have been imported directly (by him) from all over the globe.

He reckons that it's usually the sudden changes in temp that kill fish with water changes. Since that conversation with him about 2 months ago, I haven't used de-clor either and no adverse effects to my fish. The only thing I've changed is that I now fill my tanks really slowly. I do big (40-50%) water changes and this has worked on all of my 4 tanks - 200G, 55G, 12G, 1G.

I'm just putting this out there... please don't go blaming any fish deaths on me ;)

I use Aquarium Pharacueticals "Stress Coat" and "Ammo Lock2", and have been using them with no problems for the past 15 years. The only other thing I ever used was that Korden stuff. Always two different chemicals. One Ammonia/Chloramine Remover and one slime coat. That's all I've ever used in all my freshwater tanks.

What is this Prime stuff anyways? I never even heard of it.

I use Safe the dry or powder version of Prime. A 250 g bottle costs less than $ 10 and treats 25,000 gallons. You will need more than 2 liters of Prime to treat that much water.

I like Safe or Prime because it neutralizes not only cholrine but also nitrites and ammonia. Comes in very handy when there is no power and no filtration going on. Helped me survive Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma last year.
