The guy at the LFS didn't know much about them.... he said it was a barracuda. I don't think it is.... but I knew you guys would know. I never saw them before..... he had 2 of them..so I bought them both....great idea, right!;) paid 50 bucks for both of them. They are some evil looking dudes. Tell me what you think.

Armatus grow to that size. It appears you have the most common version which grows out to about 12". I believe they are called scombs?

Hydrolycus scomberoides. Most common payara which are hard to get off of live food and grow to about a foot in most cases (they get larger in the wild...no one knows why they stay smaller in aquariums). There are other species that get larger but from everything that I've read these are effectively the smallest.
 
word there's been some at my LFS for the past few months, sweet pickup.:headbang2
 
The guy at the shop told me they only eat live food, and that they get about a foot and a half. Right now they are only 3 inches, so I guess I'll give them guppies until they get big enough for something else.Anyone know if they grow fast?

Im sure it will eat rosies even though hes small... look at this old pic from on this site.

The pic and your fish look similar.
