What do I do- Nitrates high?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
just and update, I tested my nitrates from my tap last night and they are at 5ppm atm, I am not sure if it is because of the time of year or what, but 5ppm isnt a big deal.

I do a 20% water change once a week and use prime to help with the condition of water that comes out of the tap as it nutrifies a lot of nasties also helps to maintain good bacteria in your filters.

Well, it turns out our Nitrates were fine, but PH was not good at all. We did a 20% water change last night, and all I can say is those fish changed immediately!! They began swimming like crazy, coming to the top, even the Plecos came out of their rocks and I think it was a HUGE help!

So thanks to the guys at the AQUARIUM for all your help!!

Late tonight we'll try to feed them, making sure to wait 24 hours and see if they eat...they sure looked happy!

Have you tested your tap water, that may be the cause of the nigh nitrates, whats your nitrAte level now?

When this happens the best and quickest thing to do is to do a major water change. I think that in crysis situations you can go to up to 30%. It'll stress your fish a bit but still they'll be happier than before. Luckily you don' seem to have sensitive fish in there. The first one who signals me when I forget to change water is my BGK. My 100 gal is very crowded till the 190 gal arrives and situations like this happen. A good sign of nitrates starting to go mad in an aquarium is when water starts turning yellowish (exception: new bogwood, use of peat extracts and other blackwater solutions). This major water change should countinue with smaller quantities of water being changed over the next few days to let the nitrates level normalize.

i woul get some ro water in ther for the next major water problem.......... throw like 15 gallons in and moniter the situation
