chimple. It might help to dim the lights of his tank. If it gets really bad, you can cut it off with a very clean, very sharp, razor.

Yeah, when I was doing my initial research before I set up my tank I read "to prevent this" put plants at both end of your tank. I've never seen it in a home tank but I always see it on larger Ps at the pet stores in way too small of a tank
 
It'll heal in time. It's from running into the glass when spooked.
 
plant tall plants on both ends of the tank, or put black tank background on the ends. Will help him to see the ends of the tank instead of trying to swim thru. Takes about two weeks to go away after he stops rubbing it.
