What do I feed my oscars?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Beef heart is not bad for your fish is fed once in a while. I only feed mine beefheart about once or twice every two weeks.

For oscars it is very important to have a varied diet. Otherwise there is a greater chance of HLLE. I suggest a high quality pellet, blood worms, and various insects/worms.
But as I said, you can feed beefheart, but only once in a while. Some people believe that mammal proteins can cause fat bubbles. I've never seen any evidence of this. But not all fish can digest the proteins.

Thanks for the info guys.

My oscars are small right now (under 3") and they're eating 1mm chiclid pellets and occasionally blood worm cubes. I knew about oscars eating insects but vegetables?

I had it in my mine that they were carnivores not omnivores.

Again, thanks.:)

Find someone in your area that raises honey bees, the drones make good oscar food and the bee keeper will happily provide you all you want. FREE

I use to freeze them to thaw during the winter months...

Cichlid Gold pellets :)
The rare occasions that I am at my LFS at feeding time, the oscars love them

What do they eat as far as vegetables go? Can someone fire up a list.;)

Let your imagination be your guide :D
They all seem to go through a phase around 7-8 months where they start turning down food left and right so get them started early eating peas, small chunks of zucchini, chunks of algae tablets, spirilina flakes (mine still love those), etc. I'll toss in a chunk of banana or mango every few wks. Sometimes they'll eat it and if not, the bottom fish will get it.

I tried giving my O cucumber one night... totally didn't work. They just watched float past and slowly sink.

Though they do love the bloodworms :)

Mine eat a mixture of flakes, pellets, and assorted frozen food tablets.

Yeah. Havent done mice since I was a dumb kid. Wouldnt do it again but it was cool to watch at 17. The beef heart... I still give it to them. Doesnt seem to hurt em and they love it. only once a month or so.
