My parents still think it's funny that I'm in to reptiles. They thought I'd grow out of it once I got older, HA!
That's actually probably the worst response I've ever had. It came up in a conversation and the first thing that came into their head was a disaproving look and a "you'll grow out of it". Probably wouldn't have minded so much if I was 16-17 or something but it was a few months ago lol.

Another thing I get looks on is when people ask me how much they cost. Sometimes I hate saying how much I paid.
that's when the "I've lost count" or "I'd rather not think about it" comment is used.

I'm sure this has come up before but I bet if you show someone a nice little gecko or even a nice lizard or chameleon people have a pretty good response. Mention snakes and it's like you've told them you keep dead babies. Ah well, could be worse least I don't have to tell people I keep invertabrates.

There used to be a "you might be a herper if..." list floating around the net, this reminds me of that kind of.

Most people think it's cool and they're curious about them, the same as with my fish. I remember the first time my wife came to my apartment, she didn't know about my herps. It was only a 2-room place and at the time I think I had a green ig, argentine tegu, savanna monitor, retic, trio of painted turtles, and a horned frog. She was shocked and a little nervous I think (she's still not a herp person). I think if she knew about the bags of rats/mice in the freezer she'd have left right then and there LOL.

some people think that it is cool but there are others that think I am a freak. It is even worse when I say "i'm going herping" since they always seem to think of Herpes

My parents told me the same thing when I was 10 and just getting into it but 9 years later and I am going to college for it. They still think that I will out grow it and that it is just a phase. It is funny though because my mom found out that I got a new snake and (even though I am living on my own) she freaked out and thought I was hiding it from her and confronted me as if she found pot in my bookbag or something. I just laughed and my dad said "thank god this is the worst of his problems, I would rather him be addicted to snakes than drugs any day"

I always get looks when I compare keeping reps to keeping a dog or a cat. Same purpose really. I keep reps becuase I like having them around.

Some people think I'm weird and that's ok.

The only time my parents have really freaked about it was when my dad went into my room and saw a tank full of roaches lol. That was a bad day

lol yeah... roaches = vermin so they always get a bad reception. I think VF keeps some beetles that look like roaches... :D But yeah, dead birds and rodents is often a hard sell too! Ah well, it's can be a hobby like any other and to many, like you say, they are pets that are as important as cats and dogs are to others.
