If you could do a 5lx4wx2d I would go that way. We have a 44x20 and it is a real nice veiwing tank. It also gives way more room than you would think.

here is my tank, its 5'L x 4'W x 30" tall
I really think you need to decide on what you want to keep because that will make a big difference between these two tanks. If your stocking goals don't need the extra width then the the 8x2 would be best. However, if you need the width, like with rays, then the 5x4 would be best.
