State of chaos
I was wondering what everyones' opinions are about those, my friend told me to get one as an add-on filter for to 10g to increase water movement, and I have to say, not only did it do that, but it also cleaned up the tank substantially... but I have heard mostly bad reviews otherwise, both at the pet store where I bought it from and here on MFK. So...what do you guys think, and why?

They are excellent IMO. Great flow good filtration. Good volume for a HOB. Plenty of media space and if you skip the carbon you can reuse the sponge cartridge for years (mine are about a year old now with weekly rinsing) A ton of people here like them. Im curious where you saw bad reviews :)

I have a couple. They work well. I did have one leak, but I couldn't tell how old it was as it was used.

They seem like nice filters; I have Whisper power filters though and they work ok, but I cut my own pieces of foam so it gives me more bio media room.

I have eight of them of various sizes and I find they are the HOB filter of choice for me. I have other brands but prefer the ac's. Their sponges make cleaning easy and cheap.... no expensive cartridges to replace. Some of the complaints I have read about I have experienced.... they have been noisy at times...but... I have two on my 125 with sand and large fish (sand in filter=noise).... adding foam prefilters have helped. Also after power failure I have noticed sometimes one may fail to start. All in all in my opinion minor inconviences for the many benefits these filters offer. JMHO

The one main problem I see with these filters is the very low cross sectional surface area of the sponge compared to the flow rate. They can clog up quick. Even the 110 that I had would clog up faster than I would have liked. There is bypass in these filters normally. The recirculation feature of the AC filters works............almost ok at best.
