what do you consider a community of fish?

A tank of single species is a "species tank"

A single fish in a tank would be a "specimen tank"

And a group of fish that are different species and coexisting, not eating eachother would be a "community tank".

Perfect explanation IMO.

My Alligator Gar is making it difficult to have any sort of "community". I bought him about a month ago at about 6 inches long. With my prior experience with Gars I figured he would be fine with 2 small snakeheads(3") and 2 small silver gars (5"). I kept several Guppies and Goldfish in there as so he would not become too hungry to eat my fish. This Gar is like no other I have had and is ALWAYS hungry. A.G is too lazy to go after the feeders so he ate the snakeheads and silver gars. Has grown nearly 6 inches already in a month.

This is not a "specimen tank", unless it is in a lab. What you have here is a "show piece aquarium".

I have discus, festivums, lemons, and a bn pleco, but it's a biotope and not a community. I thinks a community tank is different fish from different regions mixed together. if you keep 10 different SA cichlids it's a SA tank not a community. maybe not a biotope but imo not a community.
