What fish do you use to cycle your tanks? Especially around the 55/75 gallon size?

I just throw in a bunch of media from a cycled tank and throw in some of the permanent stock (avoiding any really touchy species). If I'm starting from scratch (don't have enough cycled media from other tanks), I use bottled ammonia.

My 55g just finished cycling this weekend. I almost always fishless cycle. But this time i fishless cycled until the ammonia was zero and the nitrite was still fairly high and got 10 giant danios and put in a full bottle of cycle (120ml) and i think i waited a week and it was done cycling, i just put a GT in 3 days ago and all the fish are healthy. Also to help speed it up, i used filter media and gravel from my 2g betta tank to help speed up the process. Good luck

PS: GET THE 75G!

established media/filters is the fastest and safest way. otherwise, ive heard that seachem stability works great for new tanks

I use powdered ammonium chloride to raise the ammonia to about 2-3ppm, then I swish some old filter media around in the water near the intake, or hang it in a mesh bag. Personally, I need to see the test results change with my own eyes so I can know it's really cycled. The ammonium chloride is great, you can buy a pound of it for a few bucks, and that's enough to cycle every tank you'll ever have for the rest of your life probly. There's really no reason to use fish to cycle a tank.

I once cycled a salt water tank with a live lobster that I brought from the supermarket.

BioSPIRA!!! Make sure its refrigerated and have some sort of cooler on the way home if its a long drive...$15 for 3 ounces = 90g worth...

live fish and some media from a set up tank, i tried the food thing once i left the light on and got a huge algae bloom.
