What do you cycle your tanks with?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is how I did my 46 gallon:
1) Run tank full of water with filter, light, gravel, etc all in place.
2) Wait a day, add small and tolerant fish (I used platies and danios).
3) Wait a week, then add a few more fish. Repeat until tank is full.

And that's pretty much how I cycled my tank. I may have gotten a few parts wrong, being as it was four years ago.

i recently cycled a 30gal with seachem stabilty it takes 7 days fish can be added during the process dwarf gourami's and bristlenose catfish doing well

for that size tank i get cycled filter media from other tanks. Although for 10g tanks and those sizes i throw in a few danios or feeders.

So if I use shake some filter media loose near the filter in my new tank I won't need to use fish to cycle?

Here's how I cycled my FX5 for my 150 gallon tank. I went to my neighbor and asked for his filter gunk. By gunk, I meant all the crap from the sponge from his two AC 110 hobs. After 2 days, I added a 9" jaguar. After a week, I added an 18" endli. After another week, I added a 14" arowana and a 13" widebar datnoid. All my fish is doing great. I would say that my FX5 was cycled in two days.

One man's trash is another man's treasure this time.

oh i cant believe i thought throw this out there, you can cycle your tank by peeing in it, im going to try it one day i swear lol

set-up... run 24 hours... toss in some nasty filter soup from another tank... and drop a dozen guppies from my other tank in. .... wait 2 weeks or so... until guppies are happy and multiplying... add baby monster resident... smile as I've cycled my tank, and helped settle in a new pet =D
