What do you do when it rains?

First thing I thought when I saw this thread was...Stay inside till it quits raining. :D ...seemed simple.

If the sides of the pond are built up so water doesn't run into the pond and you have a properly screened overflow (check local laws on where you can drain pond (that contain fish) water to) and the rain water isn't acidic then Camshaft Ramrod got it right on.

After a good long rain is the time to clean the pond too, as the vibration of the rain drops help settle the detritus in the water.

If you decide on a pool later on at least you have half the hole dug :D.

Don't ever say a pond is not of the question or not a good idea. Shame Shame. J/K. I would say if your pond does atract local wildlife and reptiles, embrace it. It just shows that you have created a habitat that they like. Fish eating birds, a rouge cat or racoon will be your only concern, and not a big deal at that.

I agree but some wildlife take a big toll on your pond. I have area garter snakes and think what are small water snakes in last few months take a massive toll on my guppy pond.

I actually now have a real problem . There was a golf course right by me which was bought by a wild life group and now bird sanctuary which is great but increase in garters has taken a MASSIVE toll on my little fish.

Its like they come to eat in my yard :irked:. It sucks. Granted if I had koi it would be a zero issue and my fire mouths and jewel cichlids arent touched as have screens over pond but the guppies are reduced by 50% in last 2 months nothing I can do as cant put net over pond due to lots high growing cattail plants .

by pond I mean those pvc "ponds" 60 gallon is my guppy pond thus easy pickings for snakes .

Louie....

Is the guppy pond flush w/the ground?

Maybe a raised pond for the little guys will keep any snakes at bay.

Your correct because I have a 40 gallon pvc "pond" with just mosquito fish that isnt buried at all and its not touched .

I dont have lights in this part of yard thus just took pic with lantern to show lol. It has 1 foot buried and lots bushes and flowers around it which I should have said and looking at it now no wonder they hit that pond.

I might just put screen around it which wasnt look I wanted but at time never thought would have increase in garters, etc.
All the pvc "ponds" are atleast half way buried as come summer shade or not it makes big diff in temps.

The little "ponds" are real easy and easy to catch the fish fry but in tiny bit of water its a feeding frenzy for predators unless screen or net over them .

Thanks
