I was just wondering what everyone did with their fry. I have fry that pop up in my mixed African tank all the time but I never take them out because I'm not interested in Hybrids. There are 3 fry left from the current spawn that have found good hiding spots and I'm really surprised they are still alive. I'm pretty sure they're yellow lab/blue cobalt mix as one of the male blue cobalts is high in color right now and is protective of the hiding spots. They've gotten bigger than any other fry I've had in the tank..so I'm going to leave them and see if they happen to survive and see how they turn out. They're too small to tell what they really are and I can't get a pic because they are always hidden in some caves or in a hole in the sand they made.

So.. what do you do with your fry?

I bought 4 syno petricola and since then NO fry have survived in my tank.

They are really good at keeping the fry population down. I'm glad because my white top haras breed like rabbits.

well, i wish i had breeding problems...but i don't... but if i did have all those fry, if i were you i would raise them and sell them to either people on craigslist (easy money) or go to a kinda chain pet store that has fish, they might try to take them, or just keep them because they are unique, even if they are hybrids.

I personally wouldn't sell them if they are hybrids as they potentially dillute/muddle the genelines of an otherwise typically non-hybridized species. I say either keep them for your personal collection if you find them interesting enough otherwise cull them. Perfect chance for high quality feeders. However if you do choose to sell them you should explicitly state that they are hybrids.

You can try making a plastic bottle trap with some food to catch them. Its how I catch small fry out of my tanks. Takes a few days but you just set it and check it whenever you want.

I'm always worried I'm going to hurt them by stripping them. I figure they can just keep them in there and have a nice snack. Might go grab some synodontis and not worry about it.

Edit: I'd never sell hybrids. The only reason I'd keep them is if they had good parents and they had some amazing potential for coloration combos.

Those mbuna fry are quick, they don't want to become food. So a percentage of the batch will hide and make it to a size where they will not become food. Have you ever stripped your fish before? Its quite easy, and i never heart one of my fish. Do it with a q-tip, or the dull end of a tooth pick.
