Hello,

Just curious on what you feed your CA/SA cichlids. Do they prefer sinking or floating pellets.
Also what brand do you feed them. Sorry double post.

I feed mine mainly hikari cichlid gold. Mostly floating but I’ll occasionally put some sinking in for the catfish and since the dempsey likes sinking more.

Thanks Deadeye,
So it kinda depends on the individual fish?
Yeah they can be trained but some fish have preferences. For example my Argenteas like to eat from the bottoms because of the shape of their mouths, it's designed to do that. Same goes with Geos and firemouths. Some don't mind eating from either the top or bottom. I prefer sinking if it wont be an issue where food gets stuck in the scape.

Yeah and for the brand my go to is Omega one discus pellets, although I don't keep discus but the food has decent ingredients and is cheaper than the alternatives at least where I live. Newlife spectrum is also good, I've heard good stuff about Northfin

Yeah it can be species and individual dependent. My jack is a lurker, hides out at the bottom all day. The convict and parrot spend more time in the open and eat as such.

Observing the placement of a fishes mouth, is very telling about how and where a certain type feeds.
For live bearers, and other fish that live in shoals and find security in numbers, the surface is home, and where they find food most of the time.

When you see a mouth on fish like the ones above, or below you know it is naturally a surface feeder.

The mouths of most cichlids suggest that the surface is not where they naturally feed (of course in a tank you can train instinct out of them)
because its dangerous place to go, unless they are too big to be easily taken (like Cichla, or Umbi's).
The most common predators of cichlids and other easy mouthfuls are birds

and not only cichlids of course
