I started feeding my fish shrimp bi weekly but my Oscar is having trouble switching back to pellets. I want to feed him something other than Hikari gold. I tried starving him but still refuse to eat like he use to. what other food can i feed ?

I feed my Oscars Aqueon pellets, they get a protein treat once a week, this is jumbo freeze dried krill soaked over night in boyds vita-chem. If adult Oscars I do suggest 2 days of the week as no feed days, here its Saturday (water change day) and Thursday, Friday is protein night, and as protein=ammonia=nitrite=nitrate this is why protein day is the day before water change . bottom line here tho is a quality pellet needs to be your Oscars main diet. any thing else a treat or supplement. easy on the proteins, not good for an Oscar. they are omnivores.

i'm going to try 2 days without food and see.

I'll put it this way, I like to check ingredients lists. Don't want to see too many grain and starch ingredients on the list, don't want to see soybean meal (studies out there showing it can cause intestinal inflammation in fish), won't touch a product with ingredients like feather meal, unidentified "starch" as an ingredient, or unusually high ash content (as in % of guaranteed analysis in the mid teens or higher) and no ingredients that are brewing by products (good for cows, maybe, "puts milk in the pail" they say, but not feeding them to my fish).

as a whole we over feed our fish, dogs, cats and our selves. we feed our fish way over what they would be eating in the wild in an abounded environment. this is not good for them. leads to bad water quality, fatty liver and other internal issues.

A hungry fish is a healthy fish.

I am a big fan of aqueon jumbo floating cichlid pellets for my Oscars and jags.

i feed a wide variety of food for my fish from pellets to live gut loaded insects and worms to fresh market seafood.
all fish eat a variety of pellets as staple daily consisting of high quality pellets. these are what i feed... xtreme aquatic
monster pellets, hikari gold, hikari carnivore stick, hikari jumbo sticks, high quality shrimp/krill sticks, sinking carnivore,
hikari massivore, nls arowana floating, nls gold, nls sinking, hikari algae wafers & hikari gold bio+ for pellets. for live
i feed gut loaded meal worms, superworms, silk worms, dubai roaches, earthworms, red wigglers, night crawlers,
canadian crawlers, crickets, frogs & centipedes. as for fresh seafood i feed shrimp, tilapia filet, tuna filet (as treats),
and salmon filet (as treats). now this is what i feed all my fish not just cichlids. for smaller fish fish, fry and growouts
ill add live brineshrimp and bloodworms along with the diet.
