Temps in the 70s and semi-hard, alkaline water (though I just let the limestone and water changes take carre of that). I keep all centrals, by the way.

For what it's worth, I don't understand why everyone runs their tanks so hot!

To the op no ph is best. It is what is best for the conditions that you are able to provide. You don't want to alter you water chem. to much. In case of a need emergency Water Change you should not have to alter the new water going into the tank. As for Ph R1 and Scat keep there cichla in the highest ph out of any of us 8.+ and look at there cichla. But also they don't have your average P's ither. Just food for thought.

a constant pH is important, ro water produces the best coloration imo.
Ofcourse, water can be softened with bogwood but that leads to a slightly fluctuating ph

85F And i had my ph checked and they said it was "dangerously low" So i did a water change 50 per. and added salt... and three days later tested it again... IT DIDNT CHANGE... so the lady told me as long as the fish are eating and swimming like normal... not to worry about it... Here are my 4"'s and my 2.5"'s ... I think there color is awesome for being so small..
