Agree 100%. I think a lot of big cichlids like oscars, middevils, paratilapia, etc have great personality, but that is also subjective and matter of opinion
 
I have a birchir in my tank he is a little bit of a retard but he will come up to the glass an follow me from one side to the other. This is probably more food associated, I want to get a very personable fish have had most cichlids, do u think solo fish are more personable.

In most cases I would say yes although there is a chance of a shy solo fish

Haha I've had him for 5 years and he's only 9" bless him just didn't grow. And he just bumbles round the tank swimming in to anything an everything that's in the tank.
