WHAT DO YOU GUYS USE IN YOUR SUMPS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
we made our own filter, used the blue fiber padding with carbon, we just sew it together and make a bag out of it...

I use a micron filter bag stuffed with foam overy my intake, then it goes through 6 liters of seachecm bio-matrix, which is the best submersible bio-media ive found, a bunch of bio balls, and then 1 liter of seachems purigen. Purigen wont leach essential minerals, and nothing impacts my ph at all. Purigen is reuable to, you just bleach it back to normal. SO i never have to replace anything.

I have a 60g converted to sump with a lot of filter padding and coarse metal wiring with about 30g+ bioballs and some lava rock. I'm going to get a lot more lava rock and maybe some aquatic plants.

Thats a lot of bio balls.. What size tank does that sump/wet/dry filter.... I think the Lee's bio balls I use it says that 1 gallon filters aprox.. 35 gallons of freshwater. It is weird because I bought large and small and I believe on the box of large balls it says they filter 35 galllons and on the box of small it says a gallon filters 25 gallons. Anyways if you have 30 + gallons you are potentially filtering upwards of 900 gallons.... Anyways it sounds like a sweet setup

29 gal sump w/ 5 gal bucket sticking out
mattress pad(egg crate looking stuff) on top filled w/ bioballs
all drains to sump
heater and mag 24 in sump
also have some lava rock from an old filter just scattered in sump(prob not doing anything)

Most of mine are like this....

FIlter pad on the drip tray, (i buy a huge roll of furnace filter from a local company -super cheap and safe to use) egg crate a few inches below the drip tray to place my bags of chemical filtration when needed (carbon, etc..), tons of bio balls sitting on another sheet of eggcrate to get the bio balls up of the bottom a couple on inches, large air stones below the egg crate to inject fresh air to the bio balls.

In the sump area I have large slabs of cell pore arranged to force the water to flow thru them and another air stone.
Good setup
