Hey guys, I am thinking of keeping discus (just thinking, not really sure yet) ;) but at the same time I can't have a discus only tank. I wanna know what has been successfully kept (and not what hypothetically can be kept) with discus.

The tank I have in mind is my new 280 gals tank. Its 5' x 3' x 2.5'.

So, please share your experiences of different tankmates kept with discus; what worked and what did not. Pics would be nice. Thanks. :)

Would also welcome guesses on how many discus can be kept in my 280.

I have Paracheirodon axelrodi (cardinal tetra), Mikrogeophagus ramirezi (German blue rams), Corydoras Sterbai, Melantonia Praecox (dwarf neon rainbows), red cherry shrimp, Amano shrimp, Nerite snails.

I have not been able to keep clown loaches and I believe this to be the reasons in my case: reason, 1) They bolt across the tank all the time and scare the discus, and 2) They "tickle" them by nuzzling them with their feelers at night when they are trying to sleep stressing them out.

I just removed my 14 inch Black Ghost knife because of nipping and nocturnal activity.

Full sized Rainbowfish and Angels didn't work for me becasue they are too aggressive of eaters, and the Discus can't compete. Also I found the Angels too aggressive.

You could realistically keep 25 to 30 adult discus in that tank. It would make a grand display filled with discus. I'm not a big fan of keeping a lot of other fish with discus, so I 'll let others answer that.

My old 240 gal. in the bedroom, has misfit discus that didn't get along well in their own groups, cards, a few clown loaches, and bristlenose plecos. Nothing special. My other tanks have discus only.

a nice shoal of clown loaches and mixed tetras in a planted tank looks awesome... also some corys

Would you believe I have 2 chalceus, 2 senegal bichirs, 6 Geophagus pindare, a sailfin and goldspot plec and a pictus catfish with mine?

I'll be getting rid of most of the pindare as they get older, but at the moment, everyone's still pretty young.

I really like that set up...it looks great! Very spacious and not crowded looking. Makes me want to pull a bunch of plants "OUT" of my planted tank.

For "misfits", they look pretty, Billy!
