What do you have with your discus ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
:D The fish in there are mostly fish that got picked on in their original groups. They are 2 or 3 "retired" pairs in there as well. This is one of my oldest tanks. It once held pbass, then wild oscars, grew out a silver aro, and then it was planted with discus, but I ripped all the plants out and replaced them with some unused decor from the garage. That's why it still has the 5500k bulbs that look yellowish in photos. If they ever burn out, I'll get bulbs with more blue in them. Thanks guys.:)

I keep the following with discus
2 x Royal Plecos
1 x L002
1x L104
3x 183
2x long nose whiptails
15 rummy noses
5x mountain clouds
3x endlers
1x clown loach (the other one passed away)

I am probably going to get 10+ rummies and 20 cardinals to add to the school

Discus have small mouths. A adult discus is capable of eating small fish like cardinals, but for whatever reason they seldom do. They don't seem to be big fish eaters like other cichlids. Discus will gobble up small shrimp people keep in planted tanks however, like children eating candy.

I keep Discus, Angels, and Clown Loaches with no Problems.

good thread. Im starting a Discus tank soon and was wondering this very same question. I really like Neons or Cardinal tetras but they seem so fragile.

Stick to cardinals. Neons will be unable to tolerate the high end temperature that cardinals can. I prefer cardinals over neons. Cardinals in general are actually very hardy fish compared to neons despite the cost.

I agree. Cardinals can be purchased fairly cheap in large groups, like a dollar something each.
