I just wanted to know what most people here use as mechanical filtration in their canisters. I've been using the Marineland filter pads that you can cut to fit into your canister and they're ok. What do all of you use and why do you like it better than the rest? Feel free to vote in the poll too.
Pads typically filter finer than sponges, but they normally have a shorter service life.
Sponges typically don't filter as fine as pads, but have a longer service life.
Other = poly / dacron / filter mesh, common in sump setups. This type of filtration offers the best balance of fine particle filtration vs service life.
Other = Diatom filtration, offers the best mechanical filtration available, but at the sacrifice of the shortest service life.
I have two cascade 1500 canister filters running on opposite ends of my 55G tank (one only runs half power so its not to much current) i use a combo of (from the bottom up) sponge,bio-balls,carbon,bio balls and filter pad on top. i was also thinking about removing the weaker one and put in a Diatom filter as a polisher to clean out freshwater murk.
I use a combo of sponge and Marineland filter pad. HW-303 canister with sponge in very bottom of basket then the finer filter pad next (on top of sponge) in the bottom basket and the 2nd basket which is empty for now until I add some bio-balls, then the last/top basket has my hollow ceramic rings and on top/last another fine filter pad.
