What do you make of this

They are doing this to discus too. IMO it is nerve damage. With discus, it's said that the fry are taken at a young age and have their tails dipped in ice water. Discus breeders in Asia are denying this and claim it's genetic but I've yet to see proof of that. I'd avoid them just because I think these practices are wrong. It's right up there with dying and tattooing fish.

If it was nerve damage on the back damage of the fish would it have problems swimming with its caudal fin? (especially if the damage was done at a young age - early in development)

It didn't appear to negatively impact the discus I've seen it on. This has been happening with blue diamond discus for at least the last ten years or so because every now and then they crop up online. The thing is, if it were an inherited genetic color trait, it seems someone would be able to just spawn them. As far as I know, that hasn't happened yet.

It's not too uncommon for a cichlid to slam into a tank hood or glass and half of its face/body to turn black. Some call it bruising, some call it nerve damage. Sometimes it heals and sometimes it doesn't. You can google it and find a lot of threads on various cichlid forums talking about it. Unfortunately I think this is a sign that it's now being done on purpose. If it only happened in one species I'd be more inclined to think it was a genetic/color thing, but now that's popping up in other cichlids I'm guessing it's a bit too coincidental that the Asian breeders suddenly found a way to make halfblacks of multiple species.

The only other cichlids I can think of that express a truly genetic halfblack trait are angelfish (but I could be wrong).

The owner, he was told its was sign of stress as a juvi and something happened to cause it. He didn't feel it was gene related. Which is a shame because I thought about breeding for it. But I have trouble paying 4x the price of a normal green Texas to buy this and see it fade or peel on me lol. However based on its size , 5" I would doubt this would fade.

I read about this sort of thing in the hybrid/flowerhorn section. The fish was bred and never faded just stayed half black. They called it tuxedo or something like that . Looks different that's for sure . But its defiantely not something I would pay extra for .
