It didn't appear to negatively impact the discus I've seen it on. This has been happening with blue diamond discus for at least the last ten years or so because every now and then they crop up online. The thing is, if it were an inherited genetic color trait, it seems someone would be able to just spawn them. As far as I know, that hasn't happened yet.
It's not too uncommon for a cichlid to slam into a tank hood or glass and half of its face/body to turn black. Some call it bruising, some call it nerve damage. Sometimes it heals and sometimes it doesn't. You can google it and find a lot of threads on various cichlid forums talking about it. Unfortunately I think this is a sign that it's now being done on purpose. If it only happened in one species I'd be more inclined to think it was a genetic/color thing, but now that's popping up in other cichlids I'm guessing it's a bit too coincidental that the Asian breeders suddenly found a way to make halfblacks of multiple species.
The only other cichlids I can think of that express a truly genetic halfblack trait are angelfish (but I could be wrong).
