Syns black lateral line only extends partially and tapers downward, it does not extend
all the way up to the gills.

First photo is 3 inch

I'm sticking to bifas. :D

I bought my two bifas as "Synspilum". They were, quite obviously, not. ;)

My two pick on each other a lot and like to pick fights with the other fish as well. Lately they're getting randy and won't leave one another alone which would explain the tattered fins on my male.
For the record bifas vary in color and pattern based on location, like many other cichlids. They don't all look the same. Most hobby bifas are just a mish-mash of different collection points. There is no guarantee that a pet-shop bifas (or syns or blackbelt, etc. for that matter) hasn't been mixed with another similar looking Vieja/Paratheraps sp. back in it's lineage either so take a "positive ID" with a grain of salt. ;)

If you want to look at true pics of pure species go to www.tangledupincichlids.com

Jeff Rapps don't lie.

That is just a pic of something Jeff had in stock. If you want a real reliable source of Cichlid IDs go try www.cichlidae.com Juan Miguel's site is the best one out there by far. As for Jeff, I would not call him a liar, but I have seen cases where he was wrong before. It happens to anyone. Selling a lot of fish doesn't mean you know everything about them.
