How do you feel about acronyms/initialisms like "lol" & "omg"?
(A recent episode of Penn&Teller's Bulls**t enlightened me- they are actually initialisms; acronyms are initials intended to be pronounced as a word like "radar".)

I was doubled over with laughter the other day when someone tried to get an attitude with me by text and started using "lol" in the midst of his tirade. It was hillarious. Like a guy trying to flex on someone while sipping from a straw (nod to Kevin James).

Not only do they help you make a point faster, they also help you stay on track when writing fast. E.G, when I'm writing a paper or short story or even I.M.ing in an argument I don't lose my train of thought when writing. I respond to every Q, write every sentence I think of, and don't forget to write down a single thing that my brain contains. When I don't use abbreviations I can forget where I'm going and not write as well. They make me a better conversationalist and writer.

However, I have seen some people double abbreviate them... for example: I have seen people say "l" instead of "lol", which IMHO seems a little ridiculous.

Abbreviations used: E.G, I.M, Q, IMHO

they're ok...just don't get so used to typing that you actually say it lol...aw crap i did it again

Actually its a bad habit. Just like all the people who half ass words now and misspell words.

Most of them don't save any time. It's not like they were some great revelation that saved millions from having to type "laughing out loud!". It's just vapid valley girl talk IMO. Doh! LOL! JK! OMG I'm doing it now! I've been infected!

That's all the locals use in the Philippines! Almost everything, including all the government agencies are abbreviated down to initials!
