I'd like to have your opinions regarding the next DIY filter:
Materials:
1 x 370 gal x hour powerhead.
4 x 600 ml (1/6 gal) clear plastic cans each.
1 X Synthetic sponge.
Biomedia ceramic tubes.
Volcanic gravel.
This si just some example, the plastic cans of this picts are actually a little smaller than the mentioned above but it is just to give you guys an idea
These are the bigger plastic cans of the size I mentioned above,
^^^The first time I did it I used only 3 plastic cans and filled them with floss and volcanic gravel but now I have upgraded it to 1 more pastic can and the filling from bottom to top goes as follows:
a) Mechanical filtration:
1.-Average acuarium gravel:
At the beginning I only put floss as the firts stage of mechanical filtration but floss quickly clogs so now Im using this gravel as first stage of mechanical filtration to trap the biggest waste and help the next mechanical stage not to clog so quickly.
2.- Synthetic sponge:
This goes rectangular but you can cut it giving it a rounded shape to fill in the cans better.
You can also use floss but sponge can be rehused, when it starts to clog you just take it and rinse with water of your tank and thats it.
b)Biological filtration
3.- Highly porous volcanic gravel.
I use this gravel to trap some little remaining debrit that the other 2 stages could have let go. and also this gravel works as biomedia pretty well.
4.- Ceramic media.
Last stage is the biomedia, at this point the water that gets in touch with the ceramic should be free of any debris to keep the biomedia from clogging.
At the top of the last plastic can there's a hole where the 370 gal x h power head goes plunged. Powerhead sucks the water and makes the whole devise to work!.
I will provide you with pictures as how is the actual look of this filter working in my FH tank.
