Hi,

3 weeks ago i have a newly made 220gal tank. It was filled with water for 4 days and yesterday the tank bottom glass got busted for no visible reason.

The bottom glass cracked in the center vertically. Do you think it is because the stand was not leveled? (But before the installation the glass maker make sure the stand is leveled.) Poor glass? Does the styro really helps? Do you think a tempered bottom glass can help? By the way the tank maker put a 1/2 rubber matting since he said the stand is leveled.

I feel devastated and will cost me $150 for repair. I just wanted to know what is the cause so i can make the necessary adjustment for strengthening it.

Thanks

Man that sucks, I messed up my acrylic by not having it level, but I noticed it before the seams or panels became a problem.

150's pretty cheap to repair the bottom glass, but what was the tank makers warranty? Or did they say your SOL because you didn't use their stand?

Actually its an inwall tank.. It act as a divider to my room and my living room. I ask my carpenter to create a stand for me. And it was leveled when we started to create the tank though.. That is why we are wondering why it happens.. maybe its because the rubber is just 1/2? Too much pressure on the size of the mat it bends over?

the stand could be level but the floor might not be.

did you check it with a level before filling?

if it was properly flat and level, it sounds like it could have been a defect in the glass panel.

its rare but can happen.

We checked the stand with a level before making the tank though..

by the way where is the pressure point on a tank? Bottom middle? sides or edges?

depends.

what was the style of stand top? open top or one solid peice?

many tanks today have the bottom glass resting in a braced frame, so the tank glass never actually touches the stand, only the plastic frame does. these tanks are called floating bottom design. Companies like Aqueon/Oceanic and Marineland usually use this style for their larger tanks.

some tanks do not have this and sit directly on the stand.

can you post pics of the stand?

the stand top is a solid 3/4" Marine plywood.

This was the stand before it has fully protected with braces underneath.

you can noticed it is a full top stand.

Thanks

The bottom glass would be best served to not rest on the base. Glass does not flex like acrylic, and a little bend stress will crack it.

So it is much better to use 1" inch Styrofoam then?
