i went to this place and looked for gravel and sand and i found the mexican beach and the dakota black are very nice. the dakota black seems pretty abrasive so i was wondering if you think thats ok for a motoro? if not maybe a mix of the dakota and beach or just the beach. i also plan on putting a large piece of flat rock in the middle about 4ftx1ft

anyone? opinions are welcome.

That looks similar to tihitian moon sand, if so I wouldn't reccomend it I hate mine. It is too light.

I am leaning towards Carib sea "torpedo beach" for my next tank it is somewhere between sand and gravel as far as size goes

well they have 2 diff sizes. fine and course. the coarse is pretty big for sand. im looking at this stuff bc the most expensive stuff they have is 13 dollars for a 50lb bag :)

I would ask the company if the products are coated with anything.

they arent coated with anythin. my main consern is the abrasivness of the sand.
and i know the stones are smooth but would that be ok for rays? i know they like to hide under sand and they def couldnt hide in the stones

Your going to be dealing with whatever substrate you put in that tank for a long time. You will most likely also be adding expensive fish. I would get whatever you like the best and worry less about the price, but that's just me :)

ha im not really worrying about the price. but i dont want to spend a fortune on the substrate. im just wondering if either of these are good for rays?

the stones are smooth enough to not irratate them but then again people say its best to have sand. the black sand they offer seems kind of abrasive and sharp. which i have read can irritate the rays underside. i was thinking about mixing the 2 and using the sand to fill in the holes in the stones so not as much dirt gets trapped under there but i still get the nice look of the stones.
which would be all around best for the rays?

if it's abrasive to you, it'll more than likely irritate your rays. i'd go with something a little "softer" for them. their bodies are quite a bit more sensitive than our hands.

it there anythin wrong with about quarter size smooth stones?
