I agree about the price, often times here at local aquarium society auctions, a specimen like that will go for $5 or less.

Duanes. I got mine for free. But it doesnt mean anyone anywhere can have the same..

People will try to make their fish expensive by getting wild fish, get from high ranked seller, Put a location on the label to make it sound special, pay a lil more for a status for their fish so they feel it's worth something special, but in the end it's the same kind of fish.

At the end of the day, a nicer Dovii is the nicer Dovii. It's about the fish

They are cheap but I like them for the fish. I used to pay hundreds to thousand for an exotic animal. But If i have no cichlid, I will have no tank. Period.

It's about finding the right fish for you.

When it comes to cichlids, it isn't about how much $. They are not rare ; not too expensive.

My Haitiensis is both rare and expensive. People with Panda Uaru would argue this as well. There are certainly rare and expensive chichlids out there.

I agree totally, many of my favorite fish were free, or almost free.
And you're right about location, and, it can be about timing.
Where I live there is often a glut of some species for a year or so, then they disappear.
A few years back, I was literally giving away bags of haitiensus.
