Is it irresponsible for them not to take in fish for adoption? No
Is it irresponsible for them not to take in fish for trade? No
Can it help a LFS by adopting, trading, and by educating potential customers? Yes

The problem this comes down to is there are many uneducated fish keepers that keep them as a pet that doesn't require much work.

Those of you that read this see if different.
To us, this is a hobby. Our animals are here to give us enjoyment, but fish on our list is making sure our fish are healthy and have a good home. If we cannot give a good home, we find other ways to find a good home.

If stores didn't have to make a profit and money came to everyone for providing good services then that wouldn't be an issue. Then again that is socialist talk, and for a different time and place.

you can't expect stores to take in every single overgrown pacu or every monthly batch of convict fry from someone who buys fish without knowing the proper care of those fish

there are also fish that the store knows they will not get rid of easy and it will end up dying or th will kill it. there was a store near us where someone brought in a 5-6" fish they were housing and gave it to the store. The store was trying to sell it beucase they probably gave the customer store credit for the fish. Little did they know it was tilapia , which it would be illegal for them to sell here. their loss. Most stores if they have space tand its a fish they can move easily will take in fish. But a mom and pop pet stores that has 10 tanks 5 of them with goldfish and the rest are 10gs with platies and such is not going to take in overgrown pacus, plecos, or cichlids which they ahve no where to put.

agree completely, if you haven't worked at a store you have no idea how many people come in asking about trading in convicts and actually expect to get something in return. among other fish that are unwanted.
