Just wondering what everyone is using as far as pond dechlorinator. I have chlorine and chloramines in my water, although not at very high levels. I just ran out of dechlor yesterday and need to buy more.

I was thinking of going with sodium thiosulfate powder, since its fairly cheap and 4 ounces (in solution) treats 7,500g. 2lbs is about $27 shipped.

I also was looking at "Vanish" dechlorinator (the dry version), as it treats 6000g per dry ounce. 2lbs is about $35 shipped.

Judging by those numbers, the Vanish seems to be the better option, right? Or does anyone else have a dechlor option that treats more water for cheaper?

By the way, my pond is about 3,500g.

I would have to double check, but I don't think Thiosulfate will bream the chloromine bond, only the chlorine bond.

I use API tap water conditioner. One gallon is about $24 at Big Al's and treats 552,000 gallons of water.

Edit: I just ordered a gallon on 7/2 for $23.99, today its listed at $28.99. I must have caught a sale.

I just checked my Tap Water Report here, and they don't add Chlorine, only Chloramines, with an average of 2.6ppm.

Looking at some of the sites selling sodium thiosulfate, some say that it breaks the chloramine bond, but others don't, so I'm not quite sure about that.

That still isn't a bad deal if it treats that many gallons! man that would last forever!

Well I just looked up the MSDS, and the API tap water conditioner is actually sodium thiosulfate, with a little EDTA tetrasodium salt thrown in.

Apparently the sodium thiosulfate will break the chlorine-ammonia bond, but then you're left over with ammonia in the system.

LOL that depends on the size of your tanks. I manage to kill a gallon jug every few years. It does last a while though.

Yes, and if you test your water immediately after a water change you can usually get a low but positive test for ammonia. I have never been able to detect ammonia an hour after a water change. My bio filter eats it up real quick. It releases less than 0.25ppm with a 60% water change in my tanks. I have to measure immediately in order to see any hints at all of greenish in the test kit.

that is alot cheaper in the long run, I have been useing API stresscoat 8 fl oz bottles and I go through a bottle every 2 weeks ... man that adds up quick!

Yah, I'm not too worried about the released ammonia. All my biofilters can handle it if need be.

Now I'm just trying to figure out how 2 lbs of straight sodium thiosulfate only treats 60,000g of water, but 2 lbs of Vanish can treat 192,000g of water, when its just sodium thiosulfate itself...
