Well I just looked up the MSDS, and the API tap water conditioner is actually sodium thiosulfate, with a little EDTA tetrasodium salt thrown in.

Apparently the sodium thiosulfate will break the chlorine-ammonia bond, but then you're left over with ammonia in the system.

What do you use to get rid of the ammonia in your system?

that is alot cheaper in the long run, I have been useing API stresscoat 8 fl oz bottles and I go through a bottle every 2 weeks ... man that adds up quick!

And Stress Coat is full of crap your fish don't need.

KISS

Some ammonia will gas off, but most of it will simply be converted into nitrites and nitrates by your bacterial filter.

Biofilters....your fish produce more ammonia than that constantly.

I have been using Prime in my tanks ever since I started keeping fish, and I like it, but its not cheap stuff. It does take care of chlorine, chloramine, AND ammonia though...

The best product out there. Best of all 5mL per 50G! So a small $3 100mL bottle will handle 5000G:

Prime® removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. Prime® converts ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that is readily removed by the tank’s biofilter. Prime® may be used during tank cycling to alleviate ammonia/nitrite toxicity. Prime® detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, allowing the biofilter to more efficiently remove them.

You don't need anything else for your pond water.

Prime can also be bought for ponds. The gallon jug of Pond Prime will treat 100G per 5mL. That is what I use on my tanks. Mike D bought the gallon and I just steal some every now and then as I do not use much dechlor with the drip system.
