our tap water here basically gets pumped from the lake, treated with chlorine and florine then they add lime to add calcium and raise the hardness my ph comes out at 8.6. The phosphates are higher coming out of the tap than my old tank water, i use mangroves in the freshwater tanks to pull out the phosphates. Since i change the water not just top off i don't mind using tap for my big freshwater water changes. For my reef tanks its ro all the way, since the salt mix has buffer and everything thats needed, and ro for top off because all that evaporates is the water. If i used ro for the fresh water water changes it would be very costly and i would have to add back the buffers i just removed.
