I want to get a t5 light for a new 6' long tank and just curious as to what you all use. i have looked up several different ones at various stores and anything 72" long is like $500 and up.So there has to be some different routes i could go. I would greatly appreciate your suggestion

Normal output, VHO, # of bulbs, freshwater, saltwater, reef, planted, what are you looking for?

Are you doing a reef tank, planted freshwater????? If not, save some money and get two 3' double T12 lights. A LOT less expensive and your fish will still look good. And you could probably still grow some low light plants if tank is not too deep.

You can use shop lights and buy the bulbs. I bought the nice shop lights from Home Depot. The reflector curves downward and is wide enough. The outside is black and the inside is silver and reflects light VERY well. I think it might be 4 or 5 feet long. I have T5's also. The shop light cost about $46.00. Just make sure you get the fixture that is silver colored inside and shiny and not a flat or it won't reflect well. Good Luck!!

on my 6ft 130 gal i use a single 48" bulb

I used Nova Current USA strip light. 14w normal output T5 but still way brighter than HomeDepot shop lights.

I bought a 48" shop light from wal-mart for under $15. I put some metal ducting tape on the under side of the fixture and bought the proper bulbs..Works great on my 180..Cost effective as well..
