So are you going to post any of your stuff?!

Here's a pic from my "office", been on the job nearly five years and love it most of the time, except the hours. Not sure what else I'd want to do though, going back to a job in the "real world" doesn't sound like much fun!

I knew there had to be at least one other fish-geek railroader on here. I believe the job is fairly different over there to here with point-to-point running and nights spent away from home, furlough, bidding for jobs etc etc? I work a fairly minor part of the network, lots of slow old track (2+ hours of 25kmh running in each direction on one job) with all the beat up old locos they can find. Driving something like the 20K ton coal or big stack trains you guys have with nice new locos would be a dream for me, but I'm sure the novelty would fast wear off!

There's a lot of point to point running and nights spent away for me too(I'm on call). You have to bid for jobs here also and I'm currently furloughed so it's probably about the same. I've only been working here for a year and it's a good job but with all of the bs I'm contemplating something else.

Sorry, I meant those things were part of the job in the US. Here we are based on a fortnightly roster and guaranteed 80 hours a fortnight minimum (I'm at home getting paid now as the log traffic has slowed down a bit over winter!), and no point-to-point. We travel about 4 hours out from our depot and change over with the crew from the next city, if there is no train in the opposite direction we come straight home in a car.

The BS and hours get to me too sometimes, but every time I get down on it I try think what it would be like with a regular 9-5, getting yelled at for taking a couple of minutes too long on a tea break etc...
