Just wondering what kind of substrate everyone uses, why and what kind of fish are in the tank. I'm trying to decide what kind of substrate I should use for my 3 tanks. :)

Depends on the fish in the tank, and what bio type it is.

I have black gravel in my 75g, with a 7" oscar, 5" jag, 12" channel cat(first fish, not giving him up) and a pictus cat thats 5".

In my 29g, I have sand, and that tank houses 6 leopard frog plecos that are 2.5-3.5" in length, a queen pleco thats 4", a royal pleco thats 5", a pbass, hes 2". I also have 1 "assorted S.A. cichlid" thats 4" and 1 Saulosi Cichlid 4"(Only one left since the wipe out of my afro tank:()

Im actually planning on switching to sand in the 75g and the black gravel in the 29g.

150g: Eco-Complete Cichlid SandXTahitian Black Moon Sand: African Cichlids
55g: Crushed Coral: African Cichlids

My 180 has gravel that I bought at Lowe's.
The 220 and the 150 both have pool filter sand.

I'm cheap when it comes to substrate.

thin layer of play sand, thin fine blue gravel or bare glass.
c/sa cichlids.

Tanks with actual water in them
150 - river rock
135 - mixture of Seachem onyx, seachem onyx sand, flourite, and cheap gravel.
55 - pebble beach
20 sand
10s all bb.

In my 54 gallon corner tank with africans, I have natural colored gravel. In my 55 gallon SA/CA, I have 3M's Color Quartz T Grade in black. In my 190 about to be set up for SA/CA, I'm using 3M Color Quartz T Grade in black as well. The fishes in the 55 are going in the 190.

The black Color Quartz is my favorite. I feel like it makees the fishes color and plants really stand out.

150G-mix of Estes gravel of various natural shades from 1/8" up to about 1" it gives it a very natural look

100G-altho brackish I also just use a mix of natural gravel...I have about 50lbs of base rock for my pH support

75G-gravel from a bunch of random tanks I ran in the past...all various sorts and shapes of natural looking gravel

45G-more random natural gravel

30G(soon to be setup) will have playsand for my upcoming breeding pair of cons :)

75G with 6 inch male RD has just normal gravel.

20G with angel, dwarf gourami, bristlenose plec and 3 silver dollars has pool filter sand.

10G with convict has normal gravel.

IMO pool filter sand is the bomb.
