What does this behavior mean?

No problem, glad to help. It's actually quite refreshing to see someone asking for advice, and then applying the advice that's given. It doesn't always end that way. lol Good luck with your fish!

It's funny how fish will go through their instinctual breeding routines even when they're in an aquarium by themselves. I had a Black Belt cichlid in a tank by herself and once a month she would dig a nest, lay hundreds of eggs and then fan them for several days even though no male was there to fertilize them.

Wow that is so cool! Do you have to do any special cleaning of the eggs after a while? Like do they eventually turn to waste or what do you do?Very awesome to witness this and honored that the fish is comfortable enough to perform the act! Can’t wait to add him to the 75 gallon.

She would give up on them after a few days and then she would eat them. I'd do a gravel vac and get everything back how I liked it and in no time she would rearrange everything how she liked it. Didn't matter what I did, so I agree with the other advice, don't change anything in the setup you planned, he will arrange his tank how he wants it regardless of what you do.

Interesting, how long does it take a large fish to grow to its full size? These get about 13 inches (or more sometimes) and live up to 13 years from what I have read.

In my experience the large fish I've had grew really fast length wise the first year or two but after that it was more of a gradual growth that didn't really stand out. The main thing I would notice after the initial growth spurt was that they kept adding width/girth. Last time I went to my LFS they had a Mayan they had taken in after it had outgrown the owners tank that was every bit of 13" in length and a good 3" to 4" in width. Really nice fish.

Well not that I am looking forward to it but that has been a concern of mine is when he gets too big for the 75 how do I go about finding a safe home for him any suggestions? I have been advised not to release back into wild but if he gets too big what are the options?
