What does your LFS do when??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've caught my own fish a few times. particularly from a large overstocked tank and all the fish look nearly that same and I want that "1" particular one. I usually let them try and get the fish, If they start getting frustrated.. I offer. I also bagged my own at the petstore I use to work at often. tbh i buy fish so infrequently .. I don't even really think about it. Usually If i'm buying the owner or store manager is the one fishing them out for me anyways. besides.. nothing like making the old boss chase cichlids around a tank and changing your mind about which one you want :naughty: I know 'm bad.. I did that some years ago.. he still gives me crap about it.

my 3 local fish stores pretty much know who i am and my experience level. they don't ask me about tank size or tankmates. sadly, all of my fish stores are about making serious money but one of my local fish stores takes that to an extreme. i've talked to the employees of this one particular store, and they have confirmed that if they hit a certain daily goal for total sales, they get a small bonus. i really think they would sell their grandmothers a arowana for their fish bowls. they don't care. it's all about sales. they are young guys who want to get paid. and unfortunately they're in competition with 2 petcos and 2 petsmarts and several other locally-owned stores. and, let's not forget walmart. they're in a survival mode. in a metropolitan statistical area of just over 500,000 people, theyre trying to make money. when i was a kid, the fish store employees cared. gone are the days when a fish store employee would ask such questions. we live in a different world now. as far as bagging my own fish -- i don't want to and they won't allow that. it's too much of a liabilty, which they are at the greatest risk. not the customer.

Happy Thanksgiving

First LFS I used to hang around when I was a kid let me bag my own fish.He was probably figuring on hiring me when I was old enough. But then he took ill and retired, closed the store.

i hear ya, yanker. unfortunately, we're living in a dog-eat-dog world. the weak economy isn't helping matters. unemployment is up to 10.5%. home foreclosures are also on the rise. you can tell things are bad for local fish stores. look at how many people are selling their entire aquarium setups on mfk, craigslist and ebay. that negatively impacts the lfs. imagine if the small guys (lfs) are driven out of business . . .

my lfs used to let you catch feeders.they would charge more if they caught and bagged them. that only lasted a short time due to several arguments over how many were actually in the bag.

WOW.. I hate feeders anyways!

I've got a few LFS around here that will allow me to bag my own fish. Most of the time I have them do it to earn their keep though ;P

Over here in HK normally shops don't let you bag and catch your own fish... although i have to be honest in saying, there are only a few shops that actually take any care while doing it to prevent stressing out the fish...
